What is Tae Kwon Do?

TaeKwonDo is a native Korean form of unarmed combat that originated in response to primitive man’s need to protect himself from marauding contemporaries. It is a martial art that employs kicking, punching, jumping, blocking, dodging and deflecting blows as fundamental techniques, utilizing the feet and hands as weapons. To some, Tae Kwon Do is known as Korean Karate. However, Karate is a Japanese Term that has become a popular generic name for many systems of unarmed self-defense developed in Asia. The term itself means “empty hand’” and therefore indicates a basic difference from Tae Kwon Do since it does not imply significant use of the feet.
